Jared’s Place – Legal Advocacy

Jared’s Place is a legal resource centre that provides legal information and support to women who have experienced domestic violence, abuse, and/or human trafficking and are going through the legal system. This service has no cost associated with it.

Our Legal Advocate provides support, information, advocacy, and referrals for family, criminal, child welfare, and immigration matters. They provide accompaniment to legal appointments and court, safety planning, and help you prepare legal documents and applications. Our legal advocate is not a lawyer and does not provide legal advice.

The Legal Advocate helps provide information and linkages to necessary legal supports and works with a Legal Aid Consultant to ensure your legal questions are answered. The Legal Advocate can also provide free Domestic Violence Legal Aid Vouchers and can connect you with Legal Aid, Duty Counsel, or lawyers providing specialized services in the community.

Accompaniment

We know that attending court can place you at an increased risk if you have left an abusive relationship and are accessing the Courts. We also acknowledge how difficult, frustrating, confusing, and scary attending Court and legal appointments can be. Our legal advocate and court support volunteers can attend with you in-person, provide virtual support, and help organize and record important information. Although they may not always be permitted into the courtroom, they are available to support prior to and after your appointment or appearance in these cases.
